PROFILE: Aldershot

Aldershot
Aldershot is a large town with a fascinating, deep-rooted military history, situated 55km (35 miles) southwest of London, and about 13 miles southwest of Guildford. It is situated at a comfortable distance from London, but close enough for a commute, with handy rail links to the big city. With around 33,840 people living in the town it is a comfortable size, small enough to feel a sense of community.

The modernised town centre embodies the garrison style and military roots of the town. The town hosts two successful theatres, Princes Hall and the West End Centre, with some of the country¹s top acts performing on a regular basis. As for shopping, Aldershot is home to some top retail out lets, ranging from Marks and Spencer¹s, to Topshop, JJB Sports, to a handful of army surplus stores and a various selection of cut price designer stores in The Galleries.

Aldershot was the principal retail centre in the Blackwater Valley, now served by a new dual carriageway link between the busy A31 and the M3, and although other centres have sprung up to compete, the pedestrian shopping areas of Union Street and Wellington Street remain popular.

The Aldershot Garrison Sports Centre is a popular addition to the town as it is the only leisure centre in the area where one can enjoy an 'Olympic' standard swimming pool. The town also boasts a popular dry ski slope.

Aldershot¹s extensive library holds a great collection of military history, focusing on the British Army and there are plenty of military museums of various kinds in the area. Other facilities include an observatory and a variety of pubs and restaurants to suit all tastes; there is even a strip-club.

The history can be felt throughout the town, complimenting the recent modern developments to the town centre. The variety of housing has also benefited from the military history of the town, and the vast range of properties available makes it a great place to settle down.
