School's in Session

Brighton College remains top of the class with new
facilities and happy pupils.
League tables rank Brighton College as the leading academic
school in Sussex and the top co-educational school in England in
2008, 2009 and 2010.
Brighton College is also a school of firsts: it was the first
public school to be established in Sussex; the first to make
Mandarin
Chinese a core part of the curriculum; the first to introduce
entrepreneurship as a key part of the sixth form curriculum; the
first to introduce the new ‘Story of our Land’ course
that restores a sense of chronology to the study of History; the
first to publish a school magazine, to build a gymnasium, and to
construct purpose-built science laboratories.
The school places as much importance on developing children
beyond the curriculum: life skills such as how to iron a shirt,
read a map or manage awkward social situations are all weaved into
an extensive and rich education.
An unrivalled programme of visiting speakers, extensive
extra-curricular excursions at home and overseas assist
pupils’ general development, and much emphasis is placed on
being involved in the wider community.
Their location in Kemp Town also encourages pupils to feel a
part of society, not apart from it.
Brighton College’s “outstanding” pastoral
care, as judged by Ofsted (2009), creates an environment that
allows pupils to develop as individuals.
Every pupil joins a house overseen by a House Master or
Mistress, assisted by a team of dedicated Tutors, each assigned to
a small group of pupils.
It allows every pupil's personal development to be monitored
closely. Each year group is overseen by an Assistant Head who has
responsibility for the welfare and development of pupils.
In addition, the Chaplaincy and Medical Centre offer
confidential support and guidance. The co-educational environment
helps support this with the recent independent 2009 report stating
that “no child at Brighton College can possibly slip through
the net”.
The facilities are as outstanding as the teaching and pastoral
care.
The college has a swimming pool, professional dance studio,
netball courts and tennis courts, as well as extensive pitches at
the ‘Home Ground’ on campus and at the ‘New
Ground’, a short walk off site.
The school’s location near the sea also allows access to
less usual sports facilities such as beach volleyball courts, open
water kayaking and diving.
The Arts at the school are equally well catered for with a new
centre for the visual arts, extensive recital and practice rooms,
and use of the best concert halls and theatres the city’s
vibrant artistic scene has to offer.
Recent additions to the school include a new language
laboratory; visual arts centre; sixth form lecture theatre; four
new day houses and an additional girls’ boarding house; a new
sports pavilion; new history department, and a new medical
centre.
This year sees the opening of a new lower school building
alongside a new English department, design technology studios and a
junior boarding house.
2011 will see further changes including new social areas for
boarders and the sixth form; a new health centre; chaplaincy, and
an outdoor theatre added to the school.
At Brighton College, the pupils come first. Their individuality
is respected and their unique talents are developed in an
atmosphere that is happy, purposeful and great fun. At Brighton
College, children really do achieve more than anyone ever thought
possible.
