PROFILE: South East Cornwall - Often Considered the 'Forgotten Corner'
South East Cornwall is usually missed by visitors traveling on westwards. It is an area where you can walk coastal paths, explore wooded riverbanks and wild moorland, enjoy the buzz of a busy fishing village and the quiet of a rural hamlet. Historically it represents a key gateway into Cornwall with the ancient ferry crossing of the Tamar from Plymouth to Cremyll (still used), below Mount Edgcumbe House on the Rame Peninsula.
Liskeard, an original Stannary town, is a testament to a successful mining industry with its grand Victorian architecture. Looe and the picturesque Polperro, situated on a coastal stretch renowned for smuggling, has rich fishing grounds as its capital resource. Saltash, on the river Tamar has a busy waterfront and is the site of BrunelÕs stunning railway bridge.
Getting her by road is easy and quick, just 40 miles Exeter along the Devon Expressway (the continuation of the M5) you cross the Tamar Bridge, the gateway to South East Cornwall. The A38 continues westwards, providing swift access to most parts of the region.
