The Landlady: Silly Old Bags ...

I am writing this column from a beautiful poolside in West Africa. It is the end of January, and while my commuting friends battle with wintry showers and sub zero temperatures, we are basking in 80 degrees of constant sunshine. Endless days of running barefoot on the beach and simply sitting and thinking always has the effect of stripping away the nonsense that surrounds us in the West and exposing the world as it actually might be. . The Landlady: Home manoeuvres …

The blocked gutter seems to have become magically unblocked. Whether it was the furious multiple attacks with a very expensive drain rod, or the lethal dose of equally pricey drain acid that did it, I neither know nor care, as long as water is no longer pouring through my light fitting all night long. All that remain are the ominous stains on my bedroom ceiling showing the exact path of the water, complete with several ox-bow lakes. Nothing that a bit of stain block and emulsion won’t sort out.. Business News: Dehmidifyers VS positive input ventilation (PIV)

It’s a common thought that dehumidifiers are a cure for condensation in a property. Although they take the moisture out of the air, there are a number of drawbacks. Dehumidifiers are only effective in the room where they are placed which means they do not offer a whole house solution. What’s more, dehumidifiers can be noisy and they are usually turned off at night – just when you need them the most. They can be expensive to run and energy-sapping! By sucking all the moisture out of the air, t.... Read more

Latest Homes Live: Who you gonna call?

The NHS, the Department of Health and the World Health Organisation all regard exposure to excessive mould as a threat to health. The Landlady: Unlucky trio ...

As a landlady, and indeed, in life in general, I find that once something goes wrong it is unlikely to be the only thing to go wrong; it attracts other problems like flies round the proverbial. Last week, while doing a load of washing, my (incredibly expensive) machine suddenly began to emit an irritating 'alarm-clock-type' sound, then stopped working mid-cycle. 'Waterproof', flashed the sophisticated display on the front. This explained nothing about why the wretched thing had stopped workin.... Read more

The Landlady: Getting a little lost in translation ...

So, after a summer of staying put in Brighton, autumn is upon us in a flash and the season is winding down on the Pier. I have actually enjoyed staying and working very hard in Brighton for three months, although the heat-wave helped. David Maslen on feng-shui vs common sense

Several predictable aspects of a property typically impress a buyer. A well-presented, quiet area, good repair, being neat and tidy, pleasant sounds and smells, good neighbours, light and airy atmosphere, spacious rooms, well-balanced accommodation, good flow, a well-planted garden, a convenient location, privacy, etc. These preferences are not unique, as people tend to like the same things. . The Landlady Pooling resources ...

Back in February, when I was in Turkey, I mentioned to one of my neighbours that I wanted to purchase a paddling pool to put in my Turkish front yard for the scorching summer months. We were sitting in her house at the time, playing post-dinner games as it poured with rain outside. She claimed that she had a paddling pool that she’d bought and wasn’t going to use, said that I was welcome to it and that we’d agree a price at a later date. . Read more

The Landlady: Food from afar

Some years ago, in fact, at least 10 years ago, one of the first foreign students to stay at Landlady Towers was an Italian boy. Well, I say ‘boy’, but he was actually a 39 year old man and, at the time, older than me. As I helped him up the many stairs with his extremely heavy suitcases, I commented on their weight and, once in his room, he opened one of them and showed me why it was so heavy. It was full of packets of De Cecco dried pasta that he’d brought all the way from Naples at god onl.... Read more

The Landlady and the furniture flatpack fandango

When I purchased my new patio furniture three weeks ago, I was rather smug, certain that I’d bagged a real bargain. Now that I’ve started to assemble it, I’ve realised why it was so ‘cost effective’. Each item, of which there are 4, comes in at least 27 parts, which all have to be tediously assembled by some gullible fool, using instructions that would have been better written on papyrus in hieroglyphics. . The Landlady: Not Funny Hah Hah!

Building Opinions: Robert Nemeth on the Circus Street redevelopment

A planning application is shortly to be put before Brighton & Hove City Council’s planning committee for a decision on whether or not the long-awaited redevelopment of Brighton’s old municipal market on Circus Street can go ahead. Building Opinions: Robert Nemeth on West Pier arches

The renovation of the historic seafront to the west of the Palace Pier, encapsulated by the opening of the Brighton Fishing Museum in 1992, is one of the tourism success stories of modern Brighton. The Landlady: Up the Slippery Slope

The Small Daughter and I are holidaying in The Seychelles. We are trying our best to do this luxury destination ‘on a budget’. We would not have had to do it ‘on a budget’ had we not gone via Dubai, where we spent six hours at a stretch in Mall of the Emirates. Mall of the Emirates makes Churchill Square look like a hot dog stall in a pub car park. Building Opinions: Robert Nemeth on Palmeira Court

Palmeira Square was built on the Wick Estate, an ancient landholding whose boundaries included the coast road, the Brighton/Hove border, Dyke Road and the Stanford Estate. Its first documented mention was in 1267, at which point it was mortgaged to ‘Samuel, son of Isaac the Jew of Norwich’. Isaac Lyon Goldsmid (the first Jewish baronet) bought the estate in 1830 after a portion had been sold off to form Brunswick Town.. Read more

The Landlady: Baby talk

I do not want another baby. Friends of mine reading this, who haven’t seen me for a few months might be having a mild stroke now, but it’s OK. I’m not pregnant. It’s just that for the first time in my life I have come to the conclusion that having another baby would, besides being a miracle, be something of a disaster. The Landlady gets plastered

I did not receive the best welcome back from Cuba. After a three-hour delay at the Cuba end – during which a social worker from Bournemouth and I managed to put away almost an entire bottle of Havana Club Anejo Especial rum in the handy outdoor bar – we landed in the UK to torrential rain, wind and grey skies. While I’d been away, the building work at Landlady Towers had not gone according to plan. In fact, it had not ‘gone’ at all and, far from being finished, the builders had not actually s....
