Business News: House Proud
Since they started trading in 2011, Goldstone Homes’ philosophy has been simple; to deliver projects to their clients on time, on budget and to a high standard
It sometimes takes a major crisis to prompt a major change and for Jon Over that came in the form of a redundancy. Redundancy can be a serious set-back, or a golden opportunity to start afresh, and Jon was determined and focused enough to make the most of that opportunity.
Having worked in the building trade since leaving school he had gained a broad knowledge ofthe industry, and it had been his ambition for some time to form his own company and realise his own ambitions. Taking the redundancy payment he decided to launch his own company – Goldstone Homes Ltd. That was back in 2011, and since then he has not looked back.
Initially the company was focused on property maintenance, working across a wide range of buildings across the South East. By 2014 however, Jon made the decision to shift the company’s emphasis to construction, realising that his strengths were in new builds and major refurbishments. This has been the company’s work for the last 18 months and during that short time they have gone from strength to strength, working on new build developments and refurbishments with contract values never less than £100,000.
Jon is so pleased with the way the company has grown in such a short time that he is now set to create a new company, called the Goldstone Group, with three sectors which will include; Goldstone Homes specifically working on new builds and developments, and a sector dedicated to the area of commercial, office and retail builds and refurbishments.
This is all necessary growth to cope with a growing business and growing ambition. This, combined with a confidence supported by a great client response to the works that they have undertaken so far.
“Right now the majority of the work we are engaged in is Sussex-based but we have also done work across the South East and in London too. With new build housing projects we are looking at developments from single to multiple units and with budgets up to £5,000,000 construction costs.
“Our main source of work currently comes from private developers, architects and one-off clients. But we are moving more to working for housing associations and councils and on larger schemes with bigger architectural practices.
“I started the business on my own and it turned into the family-run business it is today.” The future seems ripe for expansion. “By keeping things compact we have been able to keep costs tight. We work with a team of approved sub-contractors and have strong working relationships with building trade professionals that we know and trust. Right now we are very interested in meeting the public, architects, agents for land and new homes and in fact anyone who has a need for a quality build. We do not however undertake small works like extensions and loft conversions. These are specialist areas that are well provided for by other companies.”
Goldstone Homes Ltd will be exhibiting at the Chartered Institute of Housing Exhibition which takes place from 3–5 March at The Brighton Centre, and they are very proud to be a Chartered Building Company and an LABC approved contractor with all of the security that comes with that ten year guarantee, once a new build home has been approved and signed off by the organisation.
“We started in the recession with a very small capital investment and we are currently tendering £4,000,000 worth of projects, a figure that I plan to double over the next twelve months. In 2014, our busiest year so far, we delivered £1.5 million of projects, a massive leap from the previous year. During that time we also had to deal with the fact that my father, Ivan, had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. In a sense it helped all of us to focus on what is most important to us and in turn that was good for our business. We now actively support the prostate cancer charity and will continue to do so.”
So what is the real driving force behind Jon and Goldstone Homes Ltd? “We want to develop both sectors of the business with the ultimate goal of being a construction top 100 business. We are a young and flexible business with strong ambitions and enthusiasm that we direct into producing a good quality result for our clients, whether that is a full refurbishment, a footprint build or developing a piece of land – from small to large. We are geared up to working to a very high specification and often in restricted spaces which makes us an ideal choice for work in already densely developed areas. Right now we are seeing a new interest in new builds and all of the benefits that they bring using new technologies and materials.”
For a company that started in the recession with a very small investment, Jon and his family have utilised their skills, their hard work and their belief in a good future. With such committment, Goldstone Homes Ltd look set to go far.
